Good arguments

The Normblog profile this week is Brian Micklethwait. It brought back fond memories of a conference in 2001 at Manchester Metropolitan University organised by my then PhD supervisor and friend Steve Davies. I gave a paper with Brian in the audience. The debate started, continued, continued, and went on some more, as libertarian went up against libertarian left. It was one of the best intellectual workouts I have ever had.

Several pints later, over a curry, still arguing, I finally spotted a point on which we could agree – debate is an outlet for competitive people who are crap at sport. He roared with laughter and we argued about football after that.

That was a good couple of days. Nice man and as an argumentative so-and-so, world class!
